That’s where the Nanaimo Museum comes in.
Located just steps from Commercial Street in the heart of Downtown Nanaimo, the museum is the perfect place to spend an afternoon exploring the people, places, and moments that helped shape the region we know today. Better yet? Admission is by donation, making it an easy addition to any Nanaimo itinerary!
Inside, get ready to immerse yourself in engaging exhibits that bring local history to life. From the coal mining industry to stories of the Snuneymuxw people, transportation, industry, and everyday life on Vancouver Island, the exhibits offer a fascinating look at how Nanaimo and the surrounding region have evolved over the years. With interactive displays, artifacts, and immersive storytelling, the museum is just as engaging for curious kids as it is for history buffs.
Alongside its permanent collection, the museum also hosts rotating exhibitions throughout the year. Currently on display is Grow Nanaimo, an interactive exhibit exploring the people, farms, and food systems that helped feed a growing community. Discover stories of culturally diverse farmers, coal mining company farms, and the history of Five Acres, a farming community located in what is now Harewood. Explore hands-on activities, peek inside the greenhouse displays, and even take a seat in the interactive outhouse to uncover the surprisingly fascinating stories of Nanaimo’s early “night soil” scavengers.
The exhibit is on display until September 7, so if you’re looking for a unique way to connect with the region’s past, now’s the perfect time to stop in and see what’s growing!
